Meet Dr. Thompson

Dr. Joseph H. Thompson is, first and foremost, a West Virginian and proud of it. He was born in Huntington, WV, in 1960 and raised in the Tri-State area by his loving parents, Daisy and Linvill Thompson. Dr. Thompson spent part of his youth in the City of Huntington and also the Milton area, where he resides now. He is a graduate of the former Milton High School Greyhounds.

Dr. Thompson attended Marshall University in the early ’80s and entered Marshall as a chemistry major. After three years of undergraduate work at Marshall University, Dr. Thompson was accepted to West Virginia University School of Dentistry in 1981, where he graduated from the WVU Dental School with a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. He was ranked 5th in his class size of 52.

Dr. Thompson worked in the Pediatric Department at WVU Dental School for one year before starting his Orthodontic graduate training at West Virginia University in 1986.

He graduated from the Orthodontic program in 1988 with a Master of Science in the Study of Orthodontia. Upon graduation, Dr. Thompson decided it was time to put this education to good use and purchased an orthodontic practice from Dr. Robert Jennings in Huntington, WV.

Associations / Community Involvement

Dr. Thompson is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, West Virginia Dental Association, and Huntington Dental Society. He has been a delegate to the American Dental Association representing the State of West Virginia. He is also a member of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and is an advocate for small businesses. He is very involved in local schools and has become their business partner. He gives lectures during the school year on dentistry and dental hygiene. Call the office to make arrangements if you want Dr. Thompson to come to your class. Dr. Thompson opens his office to job shadows and interns.

Personal Interests

Dr. Thompson enjoys life very much and loves to work with his staff and his patients so that they can have the smile they’ve always wanted. His hobbies are computers, music, and jewelry. Dr. Thompson has an audio recording studio, develops websites like this one, repairs jewelry, casts/manufactures jewelry, does jewelry CAD work (3DJewelryModels.net), and does computer animation and computer repairs. He also maintains a honeybee apiary. He is into a lot of items and loves every minute of it.

Dr. Thompson and his wife, Jackie, were married in 1981 and have lived in Milton, WV, for many years. They have three daughters, Shawndra, Rachelle, and Keely. Shawndra earned her medical degree from Marshall University Medical School. Rachelle graduated from Virginia Tech Veterinarian School, and youngest daughter, Keely is an esthetician.

It is nice to put a name with a face. Dr. Thompson has always surrounded himself with an excellent team to help create a beautiful smile. He is proud of his team. The Smile Team is highly trained, efficient, and skilled in helping you during your treatment.

The office has very little turnover in employees. Most employees stay with Dr. Thompson for long periods of time. The staff has a combined orthodontic experience of over 150 years. The staff is very knowledgeable about orthodontic treatment, and you can ask them as many questions as you want. If they can’t answer your question, Dr. Thompson will. The Smile Team is here to help you and make you feel comfortable during your visits.

Angie Reynolds, CDA

Certified Dental Assistant / Sterilization Monitor / Invisalign Coordinator – Angie is a very good employee who works skillfully as a chairside dental assistant. She is also responsible for making sure our sterilization is tested and effective and is the office Invisalign Coordinator. Angie can also work in various positions in the office. She received an associate’s degree in Dental Assisting from Huntington Junior College. Outside the office, she enjoys watching her two girls in school activities, and Angie loves to shop.

Emily Ash, CDA

Certified Dental Assistant / PR Officer – Emily is our newest employee and is from the LeSage, WV, area. She does an excellent job chairside and working on various other jobs Dr. Thompson asks her to do. She is also our soclai Media officer.

Missy Jeffers, CDA

Certified Dental Assistant / Supply Coordinator – Missy started in 1992 with Dr. Thompson and is a very skilled chairside assistant who also keeps the office supplies running smoothly. She orders all our supplies. Missy received an associates degree in Dental Assisting from Huntington Junior College. Outside the office, Missy loves to work out at the gym, she likes watching her youngest daughter march in the Lincoln County High School Band, and she loves West Virginia Football.

Nancy Danford, CDA

Lab Tech – Nancy is a long-term employee who is very proficient in the lab and is a certified dental assistant. She makes all the various retainers and appliances that are used during treatment. Nancy received an associates degree in Dental Assisting from Huntington Junior College. Outside the office, Nancy volunteers with the WV Autism Society, and she is an avid Ohio State Football fan.

Sonya Johnson

Front Office Coordinator – Sonya, another long-time employee, organizes the office schedule by making appointments for current patients and new patients. She also has the important job of answering the phone. Sonya’s outside interests are working with the elderly citizens in assisted living centers and she loves to bake.

Susan Cisco, ST

Office Coordinator – Susan is an integral part of the practice. She is in charge of billing insurance, preparing account statements, working with fee schedules and making the office run smoothly and efficient. Susan received her Surgical Technology degree from Collins Career Center. Outside the office, Susan loves the outdoors and the West Virginia hills. She also roots for the West Virginia Mountaineers.
